I`m a newcomer to GIS and QGIS. I`m the current Chairman of the Dorset Diggers Community Archaeology Group. I`m interested in producing maps which georeference our geophysics data (Resitivity and Magnetometry) along with any site drawings and reference maps both for presentation and report purposes. Our winter project is researching Visual Signalling in Dorset (and through Dorset) through the ages working back from the Semaphore and Shutter Telegraph Systems of late 18 Century and early 19 Century, through Napoleonic Signal Beacons, Mediaeval including Armada Beacons, Saxon Beacons, Roman Signal Stations, and Iron and Bronze age conjecture. We think we can use QGIS to confirm intervisibility for signal chains, visibility for Beacons and to localise positions for ground investigation. ©
